Soyeon, the leader and producer of (G)I-DLE, is dropping her first full-length solo album, What a Wonderful Life, on September 7 at 6 PM. This marks her first solo release in five years and two months since her mini-album Windy in July 2021. Her agency, Cube Entertainment, unveiled the eight-song tracklist styled creatively as a formal resignation letter. The stated reason for resignation? To embark on a “wonderful life” that simply couldn’t be put off any longer.
A fresh start framed as “quitting”
The title track “I’m Quitting” pulls straight from the everyday vernacular of office workers. Instead of using rigid, formal spelling, the Korean title adopts a casual, text-message style often seen online, blending a weighty life decision with a touch of lighthearted humor. The resignation-letter tracklist and Kian84’s voiceover playfully reinforce this theme. Here, the act of leaving a company or organization becomes a broader metaphor for finally taking the leap into a life one has kept on hold.
Quitting inherently means leaving behind familiar roles and a stable routine to make a different choice. For Soyeon, who holds a firmly established position as a group leader and producer, placing this word front and center isn’t about mimicking actual corporate life. It reads more like a way to boldly announce the launch of her new personal venture. Beneath the humorous title is the reality of finally unveiling the full-length album she has delayed for so long.
The album includes tracks like “icebluerabbit,” which was previously teased during (G)I-DLE’s world tour, along with stage-tested songs like “STAR” and the “I Hate Vegetables Song.” The track “Amigo” features singer Minsoo and samples Madonna’s “Like A Virgin.” Rounding out the record are “Bankroll,” “Can’t We Just Love,” and “Sending Romance.”
Blending previously performed tracks with brand-new ones gives the album a unique texture. While songs heard at individual concerts carry the raw memory of live energy, placing them on a full-length album allows them to be reinterpreted within the broader context of surrounding tracks and the overarching theme. These eight songs work together to weave the diverse moods Soyeon wants to present as a solo artist into one cohesive piece.

Soyeon is credited for writing, composing, and producing every single track on this album. She also collaborated with heavy-hitters like the producing duo GroovyRoom and producer R.Tee. Instead of following the traditional route where a solo singer simply performs tracks handed down by outside creators, she stepped into the role of the master architect, directly designing the album’s language, sound, and overall concept.
This mirrors her established role within (G)I-DLE. As the group’s leader and main producer, she has crafted their biggest hits and steered their musical direction. However, making music for a group requires balancing the voices, images, and stage presences of multiple members. A solo full-length album offers her the space to take all that accumulated production experience and channel it entirely into her own personal stories and tastes, arranged with a much longer narrative arc.
The meaning behind the five-year wait
Ahead of the album’s release, Soyeon dropped an intro video reflecting on her journey growing up. It stitched together moments from her first birthday party, her trainee days, her stint on audition programs, (G)I-DLE’s debut and production process, all leading up to her current prep for this solo album. She explained that she had delayed this new record for a long time, expressing her hope that looking back on it in the future, it will be remembered as a deeply romantic endeavor.
What a Wonderful Life is more than a group leader taking a brief detour for a solo gig. It is the culmination of the experience she has built as a group producer over the past five years, now distilled into a full-length solo format. Behind the humorous guise of “quitting,” the message is straightforward: she refuses to confine herself solely to the roles she knows, choosing instead to actively chart her own next chapter.
