If you needed one number to capture just how far the Korean-learning boom has come, this is it: applications for the Test of Proficiency in Korean, better known as TOPIK, surpassed 500,000 for the first time in 2025. That’s up from roughly 360,000 in 2022, then 420,000 in 2023, and 490,000 in 2024, a steady climb that shows no sign of slowing down.

TOPIK is the official, government-run exam that measures Korean-language ability for non-native speakers and overseas Koreans, administered by the National Institute for International Education under the Ministry of Education. It is the credential that matters most for foreigners applying to Korean universities, seeking employment in Korea, or, increasingly, proving language skills for programs like the Employment Permit System. In 2026 alone, the exam is being held 15 times across the year, six paper-based sittings, six internet-based sittings, and three speaking assessments, a packed schedule that reflects just how much demand test administrators now have to absorb.

Much of that demand traces directly back to the global reach of Korean pop culture. As K-pop, K-dramas, and Korean variety shows have found audiences well beyond Asia, a meaningful share of new fans have gone on to study the language seriously enough to sit for a formal proficiency exam, not just pick up a few phrases. Test-prep academies and Korean-language content creators overseas have reported growing waitlists for TOPIK-focused classes, a trend that tracks closely with the exam’s rising applicant numbers.

The surge has not been without growing pains. Local reports have noted isolated cases of attempted cheating at overseas testing sites, including one incident involving a Chinese exchange student who was caught passing notes during an exam session, a reminder that as the stakes attached to TOPIK scores rise, so does scrutiny of how the exam is administered abroad.

Still, the bigger story is about opportunity. A high TOPIK score can open doors to Korean university admission, scholarship eligibility, and job prospects with Korean companies both at home and abroad. As long as interest in Korean culture keeps growing, the exam’s applicant numbers seem likely to keep climbing right along with it.
