July 6: Two Different Albums Arrived

On July 6, 2026, at 6 PM, two artists who have walked different paths unveiled new music side by side. One is (G)I-DLE’s ninth mini-album ‘We Made’, the other is Teen Top member NIEL’s fourth single album ‘California’. Their team size, album composition, and promotional methods are quite different, but they share a common thread: they show what choices long-running K-pop artists can make.

We need to calculate their careers accurately. (G)I-DLE debuted on May 2, 2018, so when releasing this album, they had passed their 8th debut anniversary and were in their 9th year of activity. Teen Top, which NIEL is a member of, debuted on July 10, 2010. ‘California’ is a solo album that came out just four days before Teen Top’s 16th debut anniversary. By common years of experience, that’s 9 years and 17 years respectively.

NIEL’s album is not a Teen Top group comeback; it’s a solo endeavor. The structure of group activities and individual solo projects is now common in K-pop. Having your own company and musical direction while keeping the team name has become a viable choice for longevity.

The very fact that two teams of different years and scales released new songs on the same day shows how K-pop artists, long after debut, continue their activities in their own different ways.

(G)I-DLE Chose a Hot Summer Over a Refreshing One

(G)I-DLE’s ‘We Made’ is an album led by the title track ‘Gimme Dat Love’. It captures the excitement and thirst-like love of a moment strongly drawn to each other in a pop sound. When you think of a summer comeback, you might first imagine a cool image like the sea and soda, but didn’t (G)I-DLE place a high-temperature love at the center of summer?

Chart reactions came out immediately after release. According to Cube Entertainment’s tally, ‘Gimme Dat Love’ topped Bugs’ real-time chart and China’s Tencent Music Korean chart. The b-sides ‘Morning’ and ‘Love Is Pain’ also ranked 5th and 6th on Tencent Music’s Korean chart. It also took first place on QQ Music’s digital album bestseller EP daily and weekly charts.

The fandom Neverland, (G)I-DLE’s official fan club, didn’t just listen to the title track and move on. The pre-release song ‘Crow’ re-entered domestic music charts, and several b-sides charted together. The consumption style of fans who repeatedly listen to the entire album was revealed in the charts. The music video for ‘Gimme Dat Love’ also topped YouTube’s music video trending worldwide chart.

The result of not only the title track but also the b-sides and pre-release song charting together shows how a fandom that enjoys the entire album can drive chart success.

The News That Soyeon Is Missing Is False

Search for this comeback and you might see claims that Soyeon stopped all activities due to health issues. But that notice is from June 2024, not 2026. Back then, Cube Entertainment announced that Soyeon would not attend fan signings and events due to poor condition and would take a break. Attaching that old notice to this activity without checking the date tells a very different story.

All five members—Miyeon, Minnie, Soyeon, Yuqi, and Shuhua—participated in the 2026 ‘We Made’ comeback. Soyeon performed ‘Gimme Dat Love’ with the members at the media showcase at Yes24 Live Hall in Seoul on July 6, and later appeared on music broadcast stages. So why should this activity be described as ‘a comeback without Soyeon’ or ‘a comeback with only four members’?

For fans, a member’s health is an important issue, but when dealing with concerns, you need to check dates and current status more carefully. Official fan community notices sometimes don’t have the year prominently displayed in search results. Sharing old notices as if they are current situations can confuse even fans who want to send support.

NIEL Puts His One-Person Agency’s Color into Two Songs

NIEL’s ‘California’, released on the same day, is a single composed of two songs. It includes the title track ‘California’ and the b-side ‘When You Smile, I Smile’. The total playtime is short, about 5 minutes and 40 seconds, but it shares a single emotion: the excitement that comes like dazzling summer light and the moment of love where someone’s smile changes your day.

Behind this album is NIEL’s solo journey. In March 2025, he established EL&D Entertainment and announced a new start as the company’s CEO and signed artist. The name EL&D combines ‘EL’ from his stage name NIEL and ‘D’ from his real name Ahn Daniel. It’s a structure where the artist himself decides the direction and scale of his activities, rather than being a department of a large company.

On July 5, the day before the release, he held a solo fan meeting titled ‘Voyage to California with NIEL’ at Songhae Art Hall in Seoul. He met fans twice, at 2 PM and 6 PM, and shared the mood of the new songs in advance. Rather than packing a large-scale broadcast schedule for album promotion, he attached a direct fan meeting to the release schedule.

A one-person agency has the advantage of quick decisions and being able to clearly showcase the artist’s color. On the other hand, there is also the burden of managing production costs, promotional manpower, and distribution networks on your own. Isn’t NIEL’s method of bundling a two-song single with a fan meeting a choice to focus limited resources on contact with fans?

There Is No Single Right Answer for Longevity

It’s not very meaningful to directly compare (G)I-DLE and NIEL in album sales or chart rankings. (G)I-DLE released a mini-album with three physical versions based on five members and a global fandom. Version A focuses on a booklet and photo cards, Version B puts the ‘Crow’ concept in a round tin case, and Version C includes five types of perfume for each member in collaboration with a lifestyle fragrance brand.

NIEL chose a two-song single and a small fan meeting. One is a way to expand the team’s brand and album experience, the other is a way to narrow the distance between artist and fan while adjusting production scale. Rather than one being more right, each is finding a way to continue activities for a long time according to their own fandom and resources.

Were the two albums released on the same day really competitors? They might clash on charts, but the two artists target quite different markets and fan bases. Rather, this simultaneous release showed that longevity in K-pop doesn’t necessarily mean the same size of album and the same promotional methods.

What to watch for in the future is also different. For (G)I-DLE, it’s about how much they will expand this world through the b-sides and performance stages of ‘We Made’. For NIEL, it’s important how he will continue with the next album and fan events under the EL&D system. The next schedules of both artists can be confirmed first on their official channels.
