Beyond Seoul: Foreign Tourists Are Increasingly Choosing Korea’s Small Cities Over Its Big Landmarks

A growing share of foreign visitors to Korea are skipping past the country’s marquee attractions in favor of its smaller cities, according to 2026 tourism data showing a marked rise in travelers seeking what industry commentary describes as “more authentically Korean” experiences: local food, traditional markets, back alleys and regional culture over headline landmarks.

Destinations named among the beneficiaries of this shift include Gyeongju, Pohang, Gunsan, Sokcho and Andong, cities that offer a slower pace and a more concentrated sense of local identity than Seoul’s high-volume tourist circuit. Travel commentary has also highlighted lesser-known spots such as Yeongwol, in Gangwon Province’s southern reaches, known for its Byeolmaro Observatory and rafting on the Donggang River, and Cheongsong, home to the basalt columns often nicknamed Korea’s answer to the Grand Canyon.

The pattern lines up with broader 2026 travel statistics showing regional visitation climbing faster than Seoul-centric travel: foreign visitors’ regional-visit rate reached 34.5 percent in the first quarter, an increase from the prior year, while arrivals through regional airports and regional rail use both grew by roughly a third to half again their previous levels.

For a tourism sector long organized around Seoul as the default entry point and hub, the shift toward small-city travel represents a meaningful diversification, one that regional governments have moved to capitalize on with dedicated marketing and infrastructure investment aimed at travelers seeking a quieter, more local slice of Korea.
