The Opening Film Reveals the Festival’s Declaration

The word ‘개막작’ (gaemakjak, ‘opening film’) carries a peculiar weight. Choosing the one film to grace the first night among dozens to be screened over several days is, in itself, a declaration of how a festival wishes to introduce itself. As the 25th New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) runs from July 10 to 26, 2026, at venues including the Film Society of Lincoln Center, SVA Theatre, IFC Center, Anthology Film Archives, and the Korean Cultural Center New York, that first-night spotlight falls on director Yeon Sang-ho’s ‘Colony’.

The Korean film program at this year’s NYAFF comprises 23 films: 17 features and 6 shorts. This is the largest Korean cinema special exhibition in the festival’s 25-year history. ‘Colony’ will have its North American premiere on July 15 at 7 p.m. at the Korean Cultural Center New York, with director Yeon Sang-ho attending the opening ceremony alongside actress Jun Ji-hyun and producer Ahn So-hee. At the opening press conference, Yeon Sang-ho described ‘Colony’ as part of a larger cultural moment where Korean and international audiences can finally watch the same film simultaneously, bridging the gap between ‘Korean cinema’ and ‘world cinema’.

Two Directions: A Zombie Epic and a Sci-Fi Thriller

If the opening film is a zombie epic, the festival’s centerpiece screening takes a completely different genre. Director Na Hong-jin’s ‘Hope’ screens on July 20 at 7 p.m. at SVA Theatre. This sci-fi survival thriller features an ensemble cast including Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, and Jung Ho-yeon. ‘Hope’ was previously screened at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, and now gains the title of its North American premiere at NYAFF. Director Na Hong-jin has been awarded the ‘Daniel A. Craft Award for Excellence in Action Cinema’ at this festival.

The fact that Yeon Sang-ho and Na Hong-jin, two directors, have been placed side by side as the opening and centerpiece filmmakers is no coincidence but a deliberate arrangement. NYAFF’s artistic director stated that this year’s lineup represents a ‘turning point’, noting that Korean cinema is no longer seeking validation from Western film festivals but is setting its own creative agenda.

Beyond the Masters: The Landscape Drawn by Twenty-Three Films

Behind the number 23 lies a diverse array of works beyond the names of these two masters. ‘King’s Warden’ screens on July 23, ‘Peninsula’ on July 25, ‘Lovely Death’ on July 25, and Na Hong-jin’s classic ‘The Yellow Sea’ returns to the screen on July 19. The short film program is scheduled separately on July 18 at 3 p.m., introducing works by Korean and Korean-American directors, including Park Hae-oh’s ‘Broken Dawn’, Oh Ji-in’s ‘SPEEDY!’, and Lee Ruri’s ‘UNDERCURRENT’.

NYAFF partners with the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) and the Film Society of Lincoln Center, and is co-organized by the Korean Cultural Center New York and the New York Asian Film Foundation. Now in its 22nd year of operation and considered North America’s most prestigious Asian film festival, Korean cinema has consistently maintained the largest international special exhibition over the past 15 years.

The Distribution Path from Cannes to New York

Korean cinema has long held a unique position in the global film world—achieving critical and commercial success abroad, yet enduring a period where it received relatively less spotlight at major North American film festivals compared to European or Japanese cinema. NYAFF was the exception. The fact that a film can grace New York screens just months after being shown at the world’s most prestigious stage, the Cannes Film Festival, illustrates how the travel routes between international festivals are steadily shortening.

Of course, this optimistic picture has its limits. Critics point out that no matter how vast NYAFF’s Korean program is, it remains concentrated in Manhattan’s art-house cinemas, limiting its reach to a broader North American audience. There is also concern that the ‘Korean cinema’ label, while effective for marketing, lumps together individual directors like Yeon Sang-ho and Na Hong-jin—with their distinct styles and interests—into a single national category, potentially blurring their unique artistic visions.

Is This a Peak or a Signal of Growth?

The current landscape—where a film screened at Cannes appears on New York screens just months later, with directors and actors standing before audiences—marks a phase clearly different from the era when Korean cinema waited for ‘invitations’ from overseas festivals. Whether this moment signals sustained growth or a coincidental peak created by two masters arriving simultaneously remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: that single decision to place ‘Colony’ on the first night already speaks volumes.
