Tied at 19-7, Head-to-Head Record Decides the Top Spot
Gen.G Esports has wrapped up the 2026 League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) regular season in first place. Both Gen.G and Hanwha Life Esports (HLE) posted identical 19-7 match records and +22 set differentials, but Gen.G claimed the top spot thanks to a 3-1 head-to-head advantage over the season. The fierce race for first, tied in both wins and set score, ultimately came down to the direct matchups between the two powerhouse teams.
By taking the regular season crown once again in 2026, Gen.G has now finished first for three consecutive years, following their successes in 2024 and 2025. HLE closed out the final week strong with clean 2-0 sweeps over both Dplus KIA and T1, but couldn’t overcome the head-to-head gap and settled for second. Both squads have secured a direct ticket to the second round of the playoffs, a privilege granted to the top two seeds.
T1 and Dplus KIA also ended the season with identical 17-9 records. T1 edged out Dplus KIA on set differential to take third place, leaving Dplus KIA in fourth. Both teams will start their postseason journey in the first round of the playoffs. Meanwhile, KT Rolster, who finished fifth in the Legend Group, missed out on a direct playoff spot and must now fight for one of the two remaining seeds in the Play-In stage.
Four Teams Battling for Two Playoff Spots
The Play-In stage runs from August 26 to 28 at LoL Park in Jongno-gu, Seoul. The competing teams include Legend Group’s fifth-place KT Rolster, alongside the top three teams from the Rise Group: Hanjin BRION, Nongshim RedForce, and BNK FearX. Out of these four, only two will advance to the playoffs.
The 2026 LCK Playoffs feature a six-team format. Four teams from the Legend Group—Gen.G, HLE, T1, and Dplus KIA—are already locked in, waiting for the two Play-In survivors to complete the final bracket. The Play-In serves as a crucial survival phase bridging the regular season and the main playoffs to determine the final lower-seeded contenders.
The first matchup is a winners’ bracket clash between KT and Hanjin BRION. Played in a best-of-five format, the winner will immediately secure the 5th seed for the playoffs. The losing team won’t be eliminated right away; instead, they will drop to the final qualification match on August 28 for one last shot.
The showdown between Nongshim and BNK carries much higher stakes. The losing team will see their season come to an immediate end, while the winner will move on to face the loser of the KT and Hanjin BRION match in the final qualifier. The winner of the opening day’s upper bracket match takes the 5th seed, and the victor of the final showdown on the last day will grab the remaining 6th seed.
Three Teams in the Rise Group Finished at 10-16
Over in the Rise Group, Hanjin BRION, Nongshim, and BNK all wrapped up their regular season with identical 10-16 records. With their match scores tied, rankings were decided by set differentials and head-to-head records. Hanjin BRION clinched first place in the Rise Group with a superior set score, while Nongshim and BNK, who were tied in set differential as well, were placed second and third respectively based on their head-to-head matchups.
These minor ranking differences translate into major structural advantages during the Play-In stage. As the group’s top seed, Hanjin BRION has the safety net of dropping to the final qualifier even if they lose their first match against KT. Conversely, Nongshim and BNK face instant elimination if they drop their opening series. A narrow margin in the regular season standings drastically alters the odds of postseason survival.
The Legend and Rise Groups represent a competitive split based on team performances up through the mid-season. The Legend Group, housing the top-tier teams, determined the direct playoff seeds, while the Rise Group filtered out the three teams advancing to the Play-In stage. This Play-In phase essentially bridges the gap at the edge of the postseason, matching the lowest-ranked Legend Group team, KT, against the top contenders from the Rise Group.
A Condensed Schedule Immediately Following the Play-Ins
The main playoffs kick off on August 29, the very day after the Play-Ins conclude, and will run through September 6. The two teams that survive the Play-In stage will face off against T1 and Dplus KIA in the first round of the playoffs. As the 3rd seed, T1 gets the privilege of choosing their opponent from the two advancing teams, leaving the remaining squad to face 4th-seed Dplus KIA.
The two winners from the first round will then move up to challenge Gen.G and HLE, who are waiting with their second-round byes. From this stage onward, the tournament shifts to a double-elimination format, offering losing teams a chance at redemption. As the regular season champions, Gen.G holds a significant bracket advantage, having the right to select their opponent from the round one winners.
The final three teams standing will battle it out in the lower bracket final on September 12 and the grand finals on September 13. Both marquee matches will be held at the KSPO Dome in Seoul’s Olympic Park. Inside this massive venue, capable of seating up to 15,000 fans, the remaining finalists will clash to crown the 2026 LCK Champion.
This year’s postseason schedule has been tightly compressed from the usual four weeks down to just three. This is to accommodate the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, which begin on September 19. Teams climbing up from the Play-Ins will have to endure a grueling gauntlet of consecutive best-of-series. Meanwhile, Gen.G and HLE have earned valuable time to analyze their opponents and rest before their round two appearances.
World Championship Berths Expand from Three to Four
The outcome of the playoffs is about much more than just domestic glory. The LCK normally holds three spots for the World Championship, but thanks to HLE lifting the trophy at the 2026 Mid-Season Invitational (MSI), the region earned an extra slot. Consequently, four teams will represent the LCK at the 2026 World Championship.
HLE also holds the right to a direct World Championship berth, a perk awarded to the MSI champions. To fully lock in this benefit, they merely needed to qualify for their regional playoffs. By finishing second in the regular season and securing a direct spot in the second round of the LCK playoffs, HLE has officially met this condition. Their international triumph not only secured their own fast track to Worlds but also granted the entire LCK an additional slot.
Gen.G has secured the top seed and opponent selection rights, while HLE showcased massive momentum with consecutive sweep victories in the final week. T1 and Dplus KIA will have to jump into best-of-series action one step earlier. For the Play-In teams, the immediate priority isn’t calculating World Championship points or title runs; it’s surviving the impending three-day gauntlet.
A Shift in Viewing Platforms for the 2026 Season
Starting in 2026, the official Korean LCK broadcasts are streaming exclusively on CHZZK and SOOP. YouTube no longer provides the Korean live broadcast. Viewers tuning in in Korean from the Play-Ins through the playoffs will need to choose one of these two platforms to catch the action.
While the final regular season standings give Gen.G the most advantageous starting position, they don’t crown a champion just yet. In this condensed schedule, physical recovery, adapting to best-of-series formats, and preparation time will heavily influence the final results. T1 and Dplus KIA’s initial opponents will also depend entirely on who survives the Play-In bloodbath. Whether the fierce rivalry between Gen.G and HLE—who finished tied at 19-7—will carry all the way to the grand finals remains the ultimate storyline to watch for the rest of the season.
