Naver Webtoon has maintained a commanding position in Korea’s webtoon platform market, with a 2026 usage-share survey placing it at 81.4% — far ahead of Kakao Page at 44.0%, Instagram’s “instatoon” format at 23.9%, and Kakao Webtoon at 20.8% (the survey allowed multiple platform selections, reflecting how many Korean readers use several webtoon apps simultaneously rather than exclusively favoring one).
Naver Webtoon’s dominance reflects its first-mover advantage and deep integration with Naver’s broader ecosystem of Korean internet services, giving it built-in discoverability that competing platforms have struggled to match despite years of aggressive content investment and exclusive-title strategies from rivals like Kakao Entertainment’s various webtoon properties.
The emergence of Instagram “instatoon” content as a meaningful usage-share category — nearly a quarter of surveyed readers — highlights a less formally organized but genuinely significant segment of Korea’s webtoon consumption ecosystem: shorter, often single-panel-per-post comic content published directly to Instagram by independent creators, existing largely outside the platform-mediated, chapter-based business model that defines Naver Webtoon and Kakao’s offerings.
For Kakao, maintaining a combined Kakao Page and Kakao Webtoon presence — even split across two distinct platforms with different content strategies — has kept the company positioned as Naver’s primary formal competitor, though the usage-share gap suggests Kakao’s properties function more as a strong secondary option for engaged webtoon readers than as genuine threats to Naver Webtoon’s primary-platform status.
With webtoon-to-drama and webtoon-to-film adaptations continuing to drive significant additional revenue and cultural visibility for hit titles regardless of originating platform, the underlying usage-share competition among Naver, Kakao, and Instagram-based creators remains primarily a battle over where Korean readers first discover and follow ongoing serialized content.
