The eight-day festival programming spanned 13 distinct categories and 71 individual programs, ranging from nationally designated cultural heritage ceremonies to community participation events and traditional folk games, reflecting the festival’s dual identity as both a solemn religious observance and a genuinely popular public celebration — a combination organizers cite as central to why Danoje has sustained such consistent public interest across generations, unlike some other traditional festivals that have struggled to maintain broad appeal beyond cultural-heritage specialists.
Central to the festival’s UNESCO recognition is its shamanic ritual component, in which practitioners conduct ceremonies intended to mediate between human and divine realms, seeking blessings and protection for the Gangneung community — a living ritual tradition rather than a historical reenactment, performed by practitioners maintaining an unbroken transmission of ritual knowledge across generations, a distinction UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage designation specifically recognizes and protects.
Alongside the ritual and heritage programming, the festival’s “nanjang” (난장) — a sprawling traditional market and entertainment fair that becomes the country’s largest event of its kind during the festival period — gives Danoje a genuinely festive, commercially vibrant character that distinguishes it from more solemn heritage commemorations, drawing vendors and visitors from across the country for what functions as much as a regional economic event as a cultural one.
