South Korea’s foreign visitor numbers crossed the 10 million mark by the third week of June 2026, according to preliminary tourism data — a milestone reached roughly a month earlier than the equivalent point in 2025, underscoring the sustained strength of Korea’s inbound tourism recovery and growth well beyond pre-pandemic benchmarks.
The first quarter of 2026 alone brought approximately 4.76 million foreign visitors, a 23% year-over-year increase and a record for the period, with cumulative arrivals through April reaching roughly 6.77 million. China remained the largest single source market at around 1.45 million visitors for the period measured, while Taiwan posted the fastest growth rate among major markets at 37.7%, reflecting strengthening travel ties across a broader range of Asian source markets beyond Korea’s traditional top visitor countries.
Tourism officials and industry analysts attribute the acceleration to a combination of factors: continued global hallyu-driven cultural interest, simplified visa procedures for a growing list of source countries, and an expanding calendar of large-scale K-pop and entertainment events that concentrate visitor arrivals around specific high-demand periods, a pattern that has become an increasingly important driver of Korea’s tourism numbers relative to more traditional sightseeing-driven travel.
The visitor surge has translated directly into consumer spending: foreign tourists’ card spending hit approximately ₩1.9 trillion in April 2026 alone, a monthly record, with cumulative card spending for the first four months of the year reaching roughly ₩6.0997 trillion — a 22.6% increase over the same period last year, reflecting both higher visitor volumes and apparently higher average spending per visitor.
With arrivals already running a full month ahead of last year’s pace by late June, tourism officials are watching closely to see whether the second half of 2026 can sustain the growth rate, particularly given the concentrated boost that major concerts and entertainment events tend to provide during specific high-traffic windows throughout the year.
