One Teaser, One ‘D-35,’ and Girls’ Generation’s Timeline Went Wild
On July 27, a single teaser image posted to a Girls’ Generation fan account set the timeline on fire. All it showed was one word — “Skibidi” — and a countdown: D-35. That was enough. Reactions poured in immediately, split between “is this actually real?” and “wait, is that song title really from the internet meme?”
Two days later, on July 29, the agency made it official. HYORISOO — a new subunit made up of Hyoyeon, Yuri, and Sooyoung — will debut on August 31 with a title track called “Skibidi.” And yes, the title really is pulled from the “skibidi toilet” meme. Asian Junkie, one of the first outlets to cover the news, admitted its first reaction was to wonder whether this was “an elaborate troll post.”
A Bit From Hyoyeon’s YouTube Channel Just Became the Real Thing
This whole project traces back to Hyoyeon’s own YouTube channel. What started as a running joke on one of her show segments has now turned into an actual title track. The three members built up a comedic chemistry on that segment that fans kept calling out — “this trio is genuinely funny” became a recurring comment.
At some point, someone decided to take that comedy and turn it into music. Asian Junkie put it this way: with how much comedic buildup had gone into this, it seemed like it might just stay a bit — instead, it’s actually happening. A meme that grew into a full debut promotion cycle, complete with teasers and a release date, isn’t something you see often in the idol industry.
A Group More Than 15 Years In Just Launched Its Third Subunit
Girls’ Generation debuted in 2007. That a group well past its 15th anniversary is still spinning off brand-new units says something on its own. TaeTiSeo — Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun — came first, followed by Oh!GG. HYORISOO is now officially counted as the group’s third official subunit.

What sets it apart is the concept itself: this is the first Girls’ Generation subunit built around comedy from day one. The earlier units leaned into serious, vocal-driven music. A group with this much history keeps finding new ways to show a different side of itself — this time, it decided that side would be funny.
The Title Alone Split the Fandom Right Down the Middle
Not everyone’s on board, to be honest. Some fans worry the title itself might be a liability. Others voiced a specific kind of disappointment: after waiting more than a decade for a new subunit, is this really the song it comes with? A few also pointed out that members now in their mid-to-late 30s leaning fully into this kind of concept feels like a strange fit.
Other fans pushed back just as hard, arguing that HYORISOO was always meant to be a comedy unit, so there’s no reason the title needs to sound serious. Taking the meme at face value and twisting it into something their own is exactly the point, they say. Even Asian Junkie landed somewhere in the middle: the teaser alone doesn’t suggest the song will be great, “but it looks like they’re having fun making it, and that’s enough.”
Everything Now Comes Down to August 31 — The Song Will Settle the Debate
Whatever’s been decided by a teaser and a title so far will get settled once the actual track drops. With the August 31 release date locked in, the real question is how well the song can pull off a full comedy concept. How far a meme can go before it becomes a serious piece of music — this could end up being a reference point for that.
More teasers and concept images are expected to roll out before release, and fans are already watching for the next drop. What started as a joke still carries the Girls’ Generation name, so how the group lands this in the end could shape how the whole unit is remembered. The mix of skepticism and anticipation swirling around it right now is, if anything, proof that people are still very much paying attention to HYORISOO.
