CU Launches Its Own Scotch Whisky Brand as Convenience Stores Chase Premium Alcohol Sales

CU has introduced “길리모어” (Gillimore), a private-label Scotch whisky, marking a notable step in Korean convenience stores’ continued push into premium alcohol categories that would have seemed far outside a convenience chain’s traditional product scope even a decade ago, when convenience-store alcohol offerings rarely extended beyond basic soju and beer.

The move reflects a broader shift in Korean alcohol retail and consumption patterns, where convenience stores have steadily expanded into wine, craft beer, and now whisky as home-drinking culture has grown, particularly following pandemic-era shifts toward at-home social drinking that have persisted even as broader social and dining patterns have normalized.

Private-label alcohol products like Gillimore allow convenience chains to capture higher margins than reselling established third-party brands, while also differentiating their alcohol selection from direct competitors — a strategy CU is pursuing alongside its other 2026 product differentiation efforts, arriving in the same competitive window as GS25’s reformulated triangle kimbap and 7-Eleven’s sandwich quality push.

Whisky specifically has seen rising interest among younger Korean drinkers in recent years, part of a broader premiumization trend in Korean alcohol consumption where consumers increasingly favor smaller quantities of higher-quality spirits over the higher-volume, lower-price soju consumption patterns associated with older generations — a shift convenience chains have moved quickly to capture given how central they remain to everyday Korean alcohol purchasing.

CU has not disclosed sales figures for the new whisky line, but its introduction adds to a broader pattern of Korean convenience stores treating themselves as legitimate destinations for a widening range of product categories, well beyond their traditional snack-and-essentials retail identity.
