Christopher Nolan’s latest film, Odyssey, passed 10 million cumulative viewers around 4 p.m. on September 6, 2026. According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated computer network, the film hit that mark exactly 33 days after its August 5 release, joining the “10-million club” that Korean audiences use as the benchmark for a genuine box office hit.
Odyssey is only the second film released in 2026 to cross 10 million. It’s also the first foreign film to do so in four years, since Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022. It’s the tenth foreign film to reach that level in Korea, and the 35th overall counting both domestic and international releases.
Ten million admissions means a single film reached a large share of the country’s population. Viewer counts and ticket sales aren’t quite the same thing, but the number shows a movie has drawn audiences across generations. For Odyssey, that record came from more than a month of steady turnout rather than one big opening weekend.
A Second 10-Million Hit, Following Interstellar
With this film, Nolan now has two 10-million-ticket films in Korea, joining his 2014 release Interstellar. The local film industry calls this a “double 10-million director,” a title reserved for directors who reach the mark with two different films. It took 12 years after Interstellar for another of his movies to clear that bar.
Other foreign directors have made multiple 10-million films before, but those records usually came from franchise entries sharing the same universe and characters. Interstellar and Odyssey share no story or cast. Nolan is the first foreign director to draw 10 million viewers twice with two unrelated films, not a sequel riding on the first one’s success.
That distinction matters beyond Odyssey itself. It says something about how much Nolan’s name alone draws Korean audiences to a theater, regardless of story or subject. Trust built from earlier films appears to carry over directly to the next one.
Sustaining Momentum Amid Hollywood Blockbuster Rivalries
Through August, Odyssey competed against Hollywood blockbusters including Spider-Man: Brand New Day. With major franchises and new releases all fighting for the same audience, holding onto screens and steady demand mattered. Odyssey held the No. 1 box office spot for 31 consecutive days through September 5.
It didn’t start with a commanding lead. On release morning, advance ticket sales stood at roughly 520,000, behind the 920,000 that Spider-Man: Brand New Day had sold a week earlier after its own opening. But momentum built past the first weekend, and advance reservations picked up again in the second week. The film gained ground over its run rather than living off opening-day hype.
The viewer count shows the same pattern. Odyssey passed 1 million on its fourth day, 2 million by day six, 3 million by day ten, and 7 million by day 19. Unlike films that spike early and fade fast, it kept pulling in audiences for weeks. Reaching 10 million within a month came from both a strong start and demand that didn’t let up.
Nolan’s Enduring Influence in the Korean Theater Market
The film’s success confirms that Korean moviegoers still turn out for Christopher Nolan. Interstellar reached the same mark years ago, and now a different film with a different story has done it again. That suggests audiences are responding to the director himself, not just a franchise or a familiar cast.
August’s crowded blockbuster season makes the record more notable. With several major releases competing for the same audience, Odyssey showed that opening-day reservations don’t decide a film’s fate on their own. Keeping viewers engaged well after release, and pulling in new ones along the way, is what kept it at the top of the box office long enough to reach 10 million.
Odyssey is still playing, so its final total is still open. But the September 6 milestone alone makes Nolan the first foreign director to take two unrelated films past 10 million admissions in Korea.
