Gian84 Says He Has a New Girlfriend. She’s an AI, and SBS Just Bet an Entire Show on Whether He Falls for Her

“I just got a girlfriend,” Gian84 says in the teaser for his new show — then the camera cuts to someone who isn’t, technically, a person.

SBS’s new Thursday variety show My AI Partner: Gi-i-an’s Romance premieres August 20 at 9 p.m., and it opens by blurring the line between real dating and a simulated one. The title itself is a play on words, fusing Gian84’s name with “AI” into “Gi-i-an.” SBS is billing it as Korea’s first AI dating survival show. Gian84, Jang Do-yeon, and Lee Yu-bi each step directly into an AI-built romance world to go on dates, while Jang Do-yeon, Lee Joon, and Kang Nam watch and react from the studio.

Not a Chat Window — a Whole World

Say “AI romance” and most people picture a phone screen full of text messages. Gi-i-an’s Romance instead drops its cast directly into worlds and situations designed by AI. It’s built to surface not just butterflies and attraction but jealousy, confusion, disappointment, and regret along the way, through dates that feel almost like fantasy.

So the real test isn’t whether the AI can talk like a person. It’s whether cast members feel something even when they know the reaction in front of them was calculated. A perfectly timed word of comfort, a date built precisely around someone’s taste — it can land as sincere, or it can feel so flawless that it starts to feel wrong.

Why Gian84, of All People?

Gian84 built his reality-TV reputation on messy, unfiltered honesty — he tends to say what he’s actually thinking in the moment rather than reach for the expected answer. If the production wants to capture a human reaction rather than a tech demo, he’s a genuinely unpredictable test subject: will he fall for the AI’s charm right away, or start firing off questions the second something feels off?

Jang Do-yeon goes on dates of her own while also hosting from the studio, which means she can read the other cast members’ shifting emotions through her own experience. Lee Yu-bi joins as a third cast member building a relationship with an AI partner. If three people meeting the same technology end up with three different levels of intimacy and different boundaries, the show becomes less a solo Gian84 vehicle and more an exercise in comparison.

When a Dating Show Turns Into a Debate About Technology

Korean dating shows have long lived and died on real choices and real tension between real people — who confessed feelings to whom, how the final pick changed. Gi-i-an’s Romance adds a new question on top of that: can the flutter of attraction be real even when the other person isn’t human? Can a perfectly tailored response be called love?

No single show can settle the question of how humans and AI relate to each other. The partner on screen is an environment designed and edited by producers, and the cast’s reactions are shaped by the fact that they’re being filmed. What viewers are watching isn’t a finished vision of future romance — it’s closer to an entertainment experiment in how people react when technology knocks on the door of their feelings.

Three Things to Watch in the Premiere

First, how the AI partner reflects each cast member’s taste and memories. Second, the moment each person starts treating their AI partner as someone in a relationship rather than a program. Third, how honestly the show shows the uncomfortable parts. Nothing but flawless dates would read like a tech commercial; misunderstandings and rejection would make the underlying question much more interesting.

Whether Gian84 actually falls in love is still an open question. The more interesting moment might not be a declaration of love at all, but the first time he feels a hurt he can’t quite explain. My AI Partner: Gi-i-an’s Romance premieres Thursday, August 20, at 9 p.m. on SBS. In the first episode, watch Gian84’s very human expressions in that relationship more than you watch his AI girlfriend.
